The big question was finally answered: Lily (Kelly Rutherford) and Rufus (Matthew Settle) had a boy. After Rufus spent the holidays trying to track down his long lost son in Boston (to no avail; Lily opted for a private adoption), the Upper East Side’s most scandalous high schoolers returned from winter break.
Thanks to Uncle Jack Bass, Chuck (Ed Westwick) was back — and still breathing. While Blair (Leighton Meester) was pining for him, Chuck was unconscious in an opium den in Thailand. Jack seemed to have made an impression on Blair, which begged the question: What happened on New Year’s Eve? Based on the scenes from next week, it looks like Lady B and Mr. Bass might have rung in ‘09 together. Speaking of the new year, Blair is already changing her ways. When invited to the oldest ladies’ club in Manhattan, she chooses friendship over society. One word against Chuck and Serena sent the old women away.
Serena (Blake Lively) came back from her vacation in Buenos Aires without her artist boyfriend (thank goodness!) and wasn’t wasting a minute. From the airport directly to high school, Serena landed in the arms of her ex Dan (Penn Badgley).
Meanwhile, Jenny (Taylor Momsen) took a break from the fashion industry to concentrate on being 15 again at Constance Billard. Though the “girls of the steps” didn’t welcome Jenny back with open arms, the Brooklyn transplant proved she could hold her own against Penelope, Isabel and Hazel, who were treating Nelly like a servant.
As for Penelope (Amanda Setton) — we can’t get enough! Blair ran a tight ship, but getting a girl to wipe Pinkberry off your yellow patent heels with her bare hand is truly ruling with an iron fist. – Andrea DeSimone
Tell us: Will Chuck and Blair last? How about Serena and Dan? And is Penelope going to stay on top?
