Melissa George’s days on Grey’s Anatomy were always numbered (she told us as much in December), but now comes word her last day is Tuesday.
“It was my choice,” George told EW.com’s Michael Ausiello of her decision to leave the show.
The actress’s deal with the ABC medical drama had an option for her to become a series regular (like Kevin McKidd’s Dr. Owen Hunt), but show insiders say that their parting was more of a mutual decision and that George’s character Sadie Harris’s story line came to a natural end.
But unlike some of her other Grey’s predecessors (Brooke Smith and Isaiah Washington), George is leaving on good terms — and has nothing but glowing praise for her cast mates. George said, “I’ve made some beautiful friends. I love T.R. Knight. I love Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers … I adore Ellen Pompeo. I think she’s a strong, incredible woman. And Katherine Heigl is the most beautiful creature on Earth.”
As for her exit from the series, “it won’t be a big send off, but it’s really cool what they do,” George added.
While one doc is exiting Seattle Grace, another doctor will be added to the rotation — one who apparently has been there all along.
Yang, Hunt and the Chief will be crossing paths with a renowned doctor from a different wing of the hospital: Faye Dunaway.
The Oscar winner will be joining the show for at least one episode that will air in February during sweeps, according to Ausiello. Here’s hoping she’ll be put on a tricky medical case involving wire hangers. –Liz Berman
