I can remember so vividly the memories of makeover week. It’s something all contestants can’t wait for, because you get to see yourself in a full-length mirror and get a little sense of normalcy. At this point in the game, the contestants are really tired and need that makeover to help them remember that they are still people with lives outside the Ranch.
Seeing Tim Gunn and Tabatha Coffey walking out of the limo was so exciting and exactly what I was expecting. Tim is a guru of fashion, but also an amazing person. The day I got to meet him, he was so attentive to our needs and understood that a makeover was about more than just new clothes. He knew everybody’s name before we met him and he learned about who we were so he could make the experience more meaningful. Tabatha makes you feel cool when you meet her for the first time. I know that sounds strange but when you are in her presence, you perk up and want to listen to her. The contestants know that they’re in good hands with the makeover, but sometimes it is hard to let go of what you are comfortable with.
Having to give a speech after a makeover would have stressed me out, but it seemed like all contestants did well — even Rebecca, who “winged it.” It was very interesting to see that Bob and Jill didn’t know about Rudy’s sister. I feel like Jill may have thought Rudy pulled a fast one on her because she is always trying to help contestants recognize why they became obese. She believes in getting to the root cause of the problem, so you can begin to grow the correct way. Finally talking about his past will help Rudy as he progresses through the next few weeks — and more importantly, in life after Loser.
Seeing the families surprise their loved ones was so much fun. Time with your family this late in the game can really boost your confidence and help you remember how tough it was back at home. For me, it helped when I saw my mother. I was getting a little homesick, but spending some time with my mama made me realize that everything is the same at home. I was not missing out on anything and it helped me become more energized. The connection Danny’s little girl had with her “new father” was adorable! I couldn’t believe how she said she wanted to start her own journey. This brought back so many memories for me of being a kid and that horrible feeling of knowing I was too big. I know Danny will help his little girl now that he knows how to help himself.
As far as the actual makeovers, everyone cleaned up very nicely! Liz had the biggest transformation from when she first got to the Ranch. Let me just be blunt: She looked old (much older than 49) and now she is a knockout! The other two young ladies were stunning — both Amanda and Rebecca are gorgeous. I can’t wait for a fun reunion in N.Y.C.! The men also cleaned up well. Rudy’s beard is gone and he no longer looks like a grizzly bear! Danny is looking younger with no grays and Allen was looking sharp.
I thought the elimination table was confusing. This happens sometimes during a reality show. Cameras are always on, but they might not be recording and a lot gets edited out. It was hard to understand what Rudy was talking about with Rebecca. Obviously, something was going on that bothered him and this was his time to say it. I would assume, since Rudy brought it up at elimination, that it was discussed with other players at an earlier time. So, Rebecca went home, but her determination has clearly not let her fail. She looks damn good! Seeing how amazing she looks has really gotten me excited for the finale! Only a few more weeks! –Tara Costa
