Jack McBrayer: 30 Rock Going Back to Its Roots

October 15, 2009

Jack McBrayer can’t wait to slip into his NBC page uniform for tonight’s season premiere of 30 Rock — but not because he gets to hang out with one of the show’s many celebrity guest stars.

“We haven’t blown it out of the water with guest stars this year,” says McBrayer. “[The writers] are trying to focus on the usual cast of players. I like that because that’s how it all started — just us interacting in the workplace.”

Of course, McBrayer and the rest of the 30 Rock crew loved the attention they received from some of Hollywood’s biggest names. “That was crazy flattering. To have people you admire and respect come up and say, ‘Make sure Tina [Fey] knows I want to be on the show,’” he says. “I’m like, ‘Alright, Meryl Streep. I will.’ Isn’t that the craziest thing ever?”

McBrayer says season 4 will have its share of crazy moments. “I’m up to my usual high jinks. I stage a page strike in the first episode and I volunteer at an animal shelter later on,” says McBrayer. (more…)

Gossip Girl Stars Headed for 30 Rock

September 5, 2008

Forget the Hamptons. Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, or at least their alter egos, are heading to Rockefeller Center this November.

Blake Lively and Leighton Meester will guest star in an episode of NBC’s 30 Rock during November sweeps, according to EW’s Michael Ausiello. The girls will play old classmates of Tina Fey’s character Liz Lemon during flashback sequences.

The episode will be Lemon’s 20-year high school reunion, and it reveals a teenage Lemon was something of a Gossip Girl herself. Meester’s and Lively’s grown-up versions haven’t been cast yet, but producers are looking at Lively’s older sister Robyn as a possibility.

Tina Fey Spills Plot Secrets (Pregnancy?!) of 30 Rock’s Return

April 10, 2008

Comedy fans, rejoice! After being felled by the writers’ strike, Tina Fey’s 30 Rock returns Thursday (NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET) with a juicy new episode called “MILF Island,” based around a show within the show created by Alec Baldwin’s character, Jack Donaghy. Things only get zanier from there. In a recent conference call with reporters, Fey opened up about juicy plot points — is her character Liz pregnant? — and even shares her surprising pick for a new love interest for her character. –Brian Orloff

What’s MILF Island exactly?
It is a Survivor-like show where, oh gosh, I think 20 MILFs and 50 8th grade boys are put on an island. We actually sat down and tried to figure out the rules of MILF Island and were not entirely successful. It involves something where the boys vote the moms off if they don’t like them anymore. And then it involves physical challenges.

Are there any other plot points you can reveal?
Both of Liz’s former boyfriends, Dennis the Beeper King [played by Dean Winters], will be back and Floyd will be back briefly. … And Liz does have a little bit of a pregnancy scare. Liz, who probably hooks up once every seven years — when it rains, it pours there for a week or two.

30 Rock takes place at a network TV station, will there be any talk of a writers’ strike on the show?
We decided that the strike did not happen in our world because we felt like for people viewing at home the real strike was a big enough pain and that they didn’t really want to hear anymore about the strike. Before there ever was a [real] strike, we had had sort of a writers’ strike story that we may just save for later down the road. (more…)

On last night’s episode, Baldwin tried on a litany of personalities (from shows like Good Times and Sanford and Son) as he helped Tracy Morgan’s character work through his family issues. Coming off a big Emmy win for their first season, 30 Rock costars Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer kick off season two tonight (NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET), joking about awards night, summer breaks and who they would like to see guest star on the NBC award-winning comedy.

What did you think when 30 Rock won the best comedy Emmy?
Jack McBrayer (Kenneth): You kind of practice your congratulations face so the camera doesn’t catch you going, ‘Oh, man!’ It was a complete surprise. We thought they were saying Third Rock from the Sun.
