Desperate Housewives Recap: Here’s to Edie Britt

April 20, 2009

Edie became the narrator on last night’s Desperate Housewives as the entire neighborhood reacted to her sudden death. Soon everyone was gathered around Edie. Susan was first on the scene, bending down and whispering, “Don’t worry, you are going to be fine.” Well, actually she wasn’t, but she did go out in true Edie fashion — as the center of attention. Two days after her death, Susan, Lynette, Gaby, Bree, and Mrs. McClusky piled into Susan’s car with coffee, baked goods and an urn with Edie in it to deliver her to her son. It gave the Housewives the pretense of spending hours together and reminiscing about the Edie viewers never got to see.

Susan
Susan remembered the first day she met Edie in the neighborhood. She was taking out the trash when Edie jogged by and saw her eating a donut out of a trash can. In the next week, they became instant friends, sharing gossip and jogs around the neighborhood…until Susan found out Edie was sleeping with a neighbor’s husband. Edie then told Susan that Karl was cheating on her with his secretary. That didn’t exactly thaw the friendship, but it sure did give DH fans insight into why Susan and Edie’s relationship was always so prickly.

Why Nicollette Sheridan Was Killed Off Desperate Housewives

April 14, 2009

While Desperate Housewives fans may be sad to see Edie Britt go, Nicollette Sheridan, who has played the role for five seasons, didn’t shed too many tears.

Upon hearing of Edie’s untimely demise, “I said, ‘OK, sayonara. It’s been a great ride. Thank you,’” Sheridan tells the new issue of TV Guide magazine. Still, she adds, “[Killing off Edie] was a risky decision that could have devastating ramifications.”

But regardless of the fallout on Wisteria Lane, Sheridan is ready to move on.

“When the show started it was such a different beast. It was exciting and dangerous and funny and edgy and bizarre,” says Sheridan. “It started feeling a little complacent, and that was very frustrating.”

Another thorn in her side? Creator Marc Cherry, whom Sheridan believes largely ignored her. She bemoans, “When you have a jewel, why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?”

Cherry, however, says Edie (and Sheridan’s) time was up on the show.

Teri Hatcher: Housewives Costar Nicollette Sheridan Should Get Emmy Nod

April 6, 2009

Fans of Desperate Housewives aren’t the only ones who are going to miss Nicollette Sheridan’s Edie Britt, who last we saw got the shock of her life after she narrowly escaped the clutches of her crazy husband Dave.

“She will be missed,” Sheridan’s costar Teri Hatcher told PEOPLE at the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance’s 8th Annual Comedy for a Cure Sunday in Hollywood. “I feel really grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her.”

According to Hatcher, Sheridan’s unexpected departure from the hit series was simply about moving on: “My understanding is that she is excited about the new adventures upcoming in her life. I feel that she deserves all the honor and respect in the world.”

Though she bids farewell, Hatcher promises Sheridan’s final stroll down Wisteria Lane, airing April 19 (when the show returns from hiatus), is full of emotional raw acting as the women look back on Edie’s life. “It was a fabulously written episode,” says Hatcher. “She should get nominated for an Emmy.”

Meanwhile, fellow Housewife Dana Delany hints that her character Katherine Mayfair could have a complicated love triangle coming up. “Katherine and Mike have big news,” Delany told PEOPLE at the Comedy for a Cure event. Asked if Hatcher’s character Susan will be involved, the actress said, “Yeah, because Susan and Mike are so close, it’s like I’m always going to be a thorn in that relationship.” –Paul Chi, with reporting by Nicholas White

Desperate Housewives Recap: Edie’s Shocking Farewell

March 23, 2009

Life is full of nasty shocks. This first of a two-part episode gave us a glimpse of the old Gaby and Carlos, the depth of Orson’s spite and the much-buzzed about and shocking exit of Edie.

Susan
Susan’s first ex, Carl, came back to town and bumped into her while enrolling his son Evan in her school. “What are you doing here?” he asked. She said, “I’m a teacher here.” “Do they know that?” he quipped. Later, Carl was called to see the school psychiatrist because Evan was drawing pictures of people killing each other with swords. Carl couldn’t believe Susan “ratted Evan out” and they started to fight again. When Evan drew another angry picture Susan asked Carl over to her house to discuss it this time. She learned that Carl’s new wife left him and their son. Carl thought Susan would gloat over the news, because it is exactly what he did to her so many years ago, but he was wrong. A compassionate Susan said, “I used to hope that one day you knew what this felt like, and now that you do, I am so sorry.”

Desperate Housewives Recap: Revealing Hidden Agendas

March 16, 2009

This week we learned that every Housewife had a secret agenda — which seems to be the case every week on Desperate Housewives. But it was all lighthearted stuff leading into next week’s big episode in which Edie will say her final farewell to Wisteria Lane.

Gabrielle
While Gaby complained about having to go to Brad’s funeral (apparently she’s not a fan of black, crying and funeral floral arrangements), she and Carlos went anyway. And it was a good thing they did. The CEO of Carlos’s company was there. He’d assumed Brad was about to promote Carlos, not fire him before his untimely demise, so he offered Carlos Brad’s job as president of the company. Gaby squealed, “We’re rich!”, but her excitement was quickly replaced by jealousy: Carlos hired an ex-girlfriend named Lucy Blackburn as his vice president. Gaby was not on board with this until Lucy showed up for dinner looking rather plump. Gaby’s jealously was appeased — until Carlos informed her Lucy has always looked that way, even when they dated. That’s when Gaby decided to enlist Lynette’s help.

Desperate Housewives Recap: Doing the Right Thing

March 9, 2009

In this week’s Desperate Housewives, doing the right thing can have good outcomes and bad ones as Bree attempted to patch things up with Lynette and Tom; Susan and Katherine made peace (for now) over sharing Mike; and Gaby gave Carlos’ boss an ultimatum about his adulterous affair, which led to a stabbing in the back.

Bree
At Tom and Lynette’s restaurant going-out-of-business sale, Bree caught Orson stealing a salt shaker and reprimanded him. Later, Bree invited her publisher Bruce over for dinner as a pretense to try and get Tom a marketing job with his company, where Orson’s sticky fingers got him trouble again. Orson pocketed Bruce’s tape recorder (the one he uses to remember ideas) and got a pat-down and a verbal lashing from Bree. She reprimanded Orson after the guests left, but to no avail: Orson next lifted one of Bree’s earrings off her jewelry stand.

Dana Delany Says Housewives Losing an Icon in Nicollette Sheridan

February 20, 2009

Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany is sounding off about Nicollette Sheridan’s upcoming departure from the show — and she says they’re losing an icon.

“The Edie character — and Nicollette in particular — is such an iconic figure,” she told PEOPLE Thursday at the “Oscar Wilde: Honoring The Irish in Film” event in Los Angeles. “She’s a classic — a classic femme fatale.”

Could Edie ever be replaced? “I don’t think there’s a lot of women like that left anymore,” Delany says. “So, I think it will be a void for a while.”

With news of Sheridan’s departure, her rep released a statement, saying, “She had a great time on the show and is looking forward to her next project.”

And Delany is echoing the sentiment that there are no hard feelings: “Nicollette is such a classy person that I think she’s already like, ‘Okay, fine. Moving on.’” — Scott Huver

Desperate Housewives Recap: No Money, Mo’ Problems

February 16, 2009

Desperate Housewives proved the old adage, mo money, mo problems true this week. Of course, the other half of the street proved that no money leads to just as many problems.

Bree
While eating dinner at Andrew’s new house, Orson discovered that Bree gave Andrew a pretty substantial raise and continuously begged Bree to tell him if Andrew made more than he did. He tried to access her payroll but couldn’t guess the password. He tricked her into giving up her childhood pet’s name by playing the porn name game and figured out that Andrew was being paid twice as much. He was livid. “It’s not about money. It’s about value and you’re saying I’m worthless.” She replied, “No I’m saying you are worth less. You’re a caterer now and you are paid fairly based on your expertise.” When Andrew left his prized Mont Blanc unattended, Orson slipped it into his pocket and got a wicked grin on his face.

PEOPLE Critic Mourns Edie on Desperate Housewives

February 12, 2009

The news that Nicollette Sheridan will be out of Desperate Housewives in April is quite a jolt if you’ve been following the show since its premiere in 2004.

True, her character, Edie Britt, has never been completely integral to the little Wisteria Lane social network — Edie has been exiled as an enemy in the course of practically every season — but she has been a wonderfully entertaining character, and you can’t help but look forward to her appearances.

She was a cougar before the word gained currency, a vamp, a sneak, a liar, a flirt, a seducer, a schemer. But Edie is also fundamentally vulnerable and lonely, drawn to the wrong men (her current marriage to psychopath Dave Williams should be ending — badly — very soon) and capable of unexpected alliances (with old Mrs. McClusky, for instance, or the awful Martha Huber, murder victim from season 1).

And Sheridan’s performance has been consistently underrated. I’ve always preferred her low-down, sexy comedy to Marcia Cross’s brittle satire as Bree. (more…)
