Big Changes Coming on The Hills and The City

August 24, 2009

Expect big changes when new episodes of The Hills and The City start up again on Sept. 29, moving from Monday nights to Tuesdays. The Hills will air at 10 p.m. (EST) followed by The City at 10:30 p.m. (EST).

Liz Gateley, senior vice president of series development for MTV and executive producer of both shows, tells PEOPLE that the new day is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the switch-ups.

Most notably, Kristin Cavallari has replaced Lauren Conrad on The Hills. “Kristin has brought new life to the show,” Gateley says. “She is the same Kristin we know and love — not afraid to mix things up. Her presence has really changed every dynamic within the cast, especially with Audrina [Patridge] and Justin Bobby.”

As for newlyweds Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Gateley says they may be taking another big step in their relationship. “Heidi and Spencer are entering some interesting new territory of considering parenthood,” she says. (more…)

The City: Whitney Port & Jay Lyon Split

March 17, 2009

They’ve had a roller-coaster relationship since their romance heated up on The City, but Whitney decided it was time to be on her own on the show’s season finale.

Still in shock from Jay’s bombshell news that he was ending their relationship before going on tour, Whitney’s head was clearly not on her job. And Olivia — hoping to score a spot as a liaison for DVF’s London division — took full advantage of that.

While picking accessories for the runway looks for New York Fashion Week, Olivia asked Whitney why she seemed down. Whit opened up about her breakup, but Olivia snapped that she was “incredibly immature” for bringing it up in the workplace. (The question remains why she bothered to ask what was wrong in the first place.)

Needing a real friend, Whitney called Lauren (making her first appearance on The City) in L.A. “I just feel really lost,” she said. “I just don’t know if I made the right decision about coming here.” A compassionate Lauren advised her to stay focused on what she came to New York to do. (more…)

SNEAK PEEK: Adam & Erin Fight on The City Finale

March 16, 2009

Erin definitely didn’t make a friend in Adam when she called during their Miami vacation to let Allie know that he had girls surrounding him. In an exclusive clip from Monday’s season finale of The City, things get ugly between the two when he pays a visit to Erin’s job and the accusations start flying.

Their argument escalates when Adam — insisting that he didn’t cheat on Allie in Miami — asks Erin, “How many guys do you date at a time?” Erin hits back, telling him he has no right to judge her.

“I love Allie more than anything and all I’m asking you is stay out of my life,” Adam screams back. “Stay focused on your own life and maybe you’ll get somewhere.”

The City finale airs Monday on MTV (10 p.m. ET).

Tell us: How will their argument impact Adam’s already strained relationship with Allie? What will happen between Whitney and Jay?

The City Recap: Is It the End of Whitney & Jay?

March 10, 2009

In the opening scene of Monday’s episode of The City, Jay talks to Adam about heading out on the road with his band Tamarama. The only problem? Whitney doesn’t know he’s leaving. “It’s either you’re in or you’re out — it’s either leave a single man or you leave with somebody that sticks by your side,” Adam advised. “Do not wait to tell her.”

Jay sprung the news on a shocked Whitney over dinner at Felix Restaurant in Soho, informing her that — oh, by the way! — he was taking off in five days and — oh, yeah! — he doesn’t know how long the tour will last.

When she asked when he found out the news, Jay revealed he’d known since before their Miami vacation but didn’t want to ruin the trip. But rather than apologize for waiting to tell her, Jay seemed to project his own guilt onto her — and said that her angry reaction is exactly why he didn’t want to tell her. Disgusted, Whitney told him to find another place to stay for the night. “Maybe you should call Danielle,” she snapped.

The City’s Olivia: MTV Has Misrepresented Me

March 9, 2009

She’s become the character people love to hate on The City. But Olivia Palermo, Whitney Port’s coworker at Diane von Furstenberg, says don’t believe everything you see. “I feel like MTV sits there and figures out, ‘How many non-smiling shots can we take of her?’” she says, adding that she hopes her “true character” will eventually be seen. “I’m normal, I’m down-to-earth, I’m funny, I’m sweet. I’m not out to get anyone at all!”

(The show’s executive producer Liz Gateley responded to Palermo’s claim, saying, “All of our cast members have aspects of their lives and personalities that are not always seen on camera … We edit to tell a story as all reality series do and love what Olivia brings to the show because she’s never afraid to speak her mind.”)

Calling from London (where she was vacationing with her model boyfriend), the 23-year-old spoke to PEOPLE about how she’s nicer than she seems, her wacky cousin Nevan and why she’s not looking to become the next Paris Hilton. – Serena Kappes (more…)

VIDEO: Whitney Deals with Jay’s Latest Bombshell on The City

March 7, 2009

It’s one drama after another with Whitney and Jay. In an exclusive clip from Monday’s episode of The City, Whitney confesses she doesn’t even know if her so-called boyfriend even likes her after she learns five days before he’s about to go on a West Coast tour with his band that he’s leaving. And he’s not sure how long he’ll be away — “a month, two months, three months.”

All the while Fashion Week is about to kick off. “I’ve given him so much, I’ve opened up my life to him,” says Whit, “And he doesn’t even have the decency to tell me, like, such a big thing in his life.” So how will it all end with the their tempestuous romance?

The City airs Monday on MTV (10 p.m. ET).

The City Recap: Olivia Steals Whitney’s DVF Thunder

March 3, 2009

If there was ever any doubt about Olivia’s true intentions, she made her character clear on Monday’s episode of The City.

When Alixe, their boss at DVF, asked Whitney to help Olivia pick out several looks for Jessica Alba’s cover of Elle magazine, Olivia was determined to prove who was in charge. As they pulled potential ensembles, Whitney selected something floral, which Olivia chided as “too matchy matchy.” She reluctantly agreed to present it as one of their outfits, but with an overwhelmingly condescending air.

Later, when Alixe and Emese, the head of publicity for DVF, showed the girls the winning Elle cover look and it was Whitney’s pick, Olivia lied and chirped, “I pulled the jacket and she pulled the shirt.” Alixe complimented Olivia for spearheading the project and Olivia gushed about how styling is her passion — while a shocked Whitney looked on in disgust.

Meanwhile, during dinner with Jay at Double Crown in Greenwich Village, Whitney asked him about his search to find a place of his own. “It’s not like we’re ready to be moving in together,” she told him. “And I would never want it to turn into something where it was forced upon us rather than this was our decision to do this.” (more…)

The City Recap: The Past Meets the Present

February 24, 2009

Fleeing the New York City cold, Whitney, Jay, Erin, Adam and their posse headed to Miami for some fun in the sun.

While images of ladies in bikinis flashed on the screen — including a gratuitous butt-cheek shot of an unknown bathing beauty — it was a girls vs. guys moment as Whitney and her crew chatted by the pool at the Fontainebleau Resort about her living situation with Jay while Jay and Adam had a testosterone fest nearby about all the tempting ladies they’d have to resist in Miami.

Later that night at South Beach club Liv, Jay’s ex-girlfriend Danielle showed up and he told her that when they went home together during her last visit to New York, it put him in “a really awkward position.” Trying to smooth things over, Danielle approached Whitney to apologize about “all the drama that was caused” and to assure her that all they did during her N.Y.C. trip was talk.

The City Recap: Time to Move On

February 17, 2009

Whitney finally put smug Olivia in her place during DVF’s holiday office party. When Whitney told her she was going to Jay’s friend’s loft party, Olivia warned her not to “get overly drunk and fall on your face.” A sarcastic Whitney responded, “Good tip from you, Olivia. I learn something new from you every day,” as their coworkers erupted in laughter and Olivia’s face fell.

Meanwhile, over lunch in Soho, Adam told Allie that Jay has been asking when she’s going to find a place of her own. “I just feel like all signs point in this direction of space,” Allie said while Adam protested, insisting dramatically, “I love waking up next to you. There’s nothing more I could ask for.”

Later at Jay and Adam’s friend’s Christmas party, things got awkward when Erin’s ex JR showed up and he and Duncan finally met. Duncan forcibly pulled Erin away and told her he didn’t like that they hung out when he was home in Canada. Erin insisted that “I’m with you — I’m not with him,” but also admitted that “the 18 year old in me still loves him.”

The next day, Adam and Jay had a blowout when Adam sheepishly told him that he wanted Allie to move in permanently, leaving Jay to find a place of his own. “You’re kidding yourself, man,” Jay barked. “I live with you guys every day and the bickering becomes more and more each day.” After Adam told Jay part of the issue was there was a third wheel in their living situation, meaning Jay, an angry Jay stormed out.

The City Recap: When Worlds Collide

February 10, 2009

Jay wasn’t exactly thrilled when Whitney told him she was inviting Olivia to his band Tamarama’s gig at the Cutting Room, and joked, “I’ll cordon off a little area for her so she doesn’t feel she has to mingle with the commoners.”

On the night of the gig, Whitney and Erin — dealing with more relationship confusion with her ex JR back in her life — arrived at Olivia’s white and fluffy apartment, but it was clear that she was in no rush to get to Jay’s show. Offering them “champy,” a self-involved Olivia was more focused on choosing her perfect outfit for the evening.

But while Olivia had her fashion crisis, Jay and his bandmates decided that could no longer wait for Whitney and the girls to start, and they went on with the show.

When they finally arrived, Olivia was incredibly out of place — seeming like she’d never been in such close proximity to people before — and Erin stressed out over JR being there, telling Whitney’s pal Samantha that “on a scale of 1 to 10 this is like a 9.5 awkward for me.” And afterward, Jay was upset that Whitney had arrived so late, but was quickly consoled when Erin told him she’d make it up to him with a round of tequila shots.
